Sara Baramzadeh, PhD, MArch published an independent study in 2017 in the Health Environments Research and Design Journal to determine if the Five Levels of Safety framework is an accurate way of evaluating the levels of risk of the various areas of inpatient psychiatric units. This concept has been included in every edition of the Behavioral Health Design Guide since its first edition in 2003. Her conclusion was the “Overall findings support the five levels of safety pattern…”.
